The artificial landscape of the relatively new province of Flevoland is home to a whole host of Land Art and other projects including Robert Morris’s https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/646" class="inline_link">Observatory, Piet Slegers’s Aardzee (earth-sea) and the https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/1732" class="inline_link">art route at Zeewolde. In 1979 Marinus Boezem applied for a grant to carry out a ‘Gothic growth project’ of trees arranged to represent the plan of the Notre-Dame Cathedral at Reims. It took another eight years for the 178 Italian poplars to be planted. 1990 saw the arrival of a second ‘green cathedral’. The project will have reached its full height in about 2015. The idea was inspired by a Japanese Shinto temple made entirely from plant materials.
