Veersche Poort is a new suburban area of detached and semi-detached houses and four-storey residential towers in a park-like setting in the south-east and residential courts in the north-west. Seven such courts register as ‘urban islands’ amidst green space and along water, joining this garden suburb to the centre of Middelburg. The residential courts are the work of several architects. The scheme makes provision for ten or so cylindrical floating houses; one prototype has been fitted out as an information centre. Herman Hertzberger developed the ‘watervilla’ concept back in 1986 for https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/882" class="inline_link">Zuiderpolder in Haarlem.
