HOME CUM PRACTICE BOERMA
H.P.C. HAAN, 1960-1963, Schopenhauerweg 1, Rotterdam
Herman Haan designed these two homes cum practices for doctor friends of his in the then-new housing estates of https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/291" class="inline_link">Pendrecht and https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/325" class="inline_link">Zuidwijk. In both two-storey houses the practice shares an elongated single-storey volume with the garage. Both, too, have facades that consist either of a composition in glass or mute brickwork planes with the concrete floors visible in the exterior. The Boerma House in Zuidwijk has a plan based on a square grid of 3 x 3 m., with walls of reused cobblestones from dockside streets, a typical Haan feature. The brickwork of the Hefting House is white-rendered.
