The Bouwhuis (Dutch for Building House) is a multi-use building for a great many organizations in the building construction sector. The brief has been directly translated into three building parts: a plinth of parking, 11 floors of offices in a T-shaped volume and an extensive 'roof slab' of meeting rooms and public services. One advantage of having these representative and collective facilities on the top floors rather than at ground level is the panoramic view to be had from them of the city, the motorway and the Green Heart greenbelt zone beyond. A sturdy steel structure provides stability and allows the upper storeys to cantilever without the need for supporting columns. In the Bouwhuis much thought has been given to sustainability, as exemplified by the double facade and underground thermal storage.
