De Groote Wielen is a Vinex district of 4300 dwellings divided into neighbourhoods and taking water as its principal spatial theme. On an archipelago in one such sub-area, De Watertuinen, Liesbeth van der Pol has designed 24 water-dwellings: two villas, eight semis and fourteen terraced houses. Inspired by American architecture, they sport roomy verandas and terraces. The symmetric, near-Classicist parti with tympani and porticos and the white, timber ambience strengthen this image. Apart from timber for the columns and fencing, synthetic materials predominate, being used for the window and door frames and the imitation zinc roof. The facades are of fibre-reinforced cement board.
