A taut urban masterplan has been fleshed out by several architects, the rural architecture of the houses clashing with the plan's metropolitan rationality. The most striking of these are the traditionalist dwellings designed by Scala and Molenaar & Van Winden. Scala built six canalside houses with distinctive timber kitchens jutting out over the water. This practice also designed the ever-so-Dutch dwellings in the central area. Sitting atop a parking deck, these are reached from a boulevard. The architecture is rural and familiar: wooden hatches, pull bells, traditionally moulded frames, all enthusiastically expanded upon by the occupants with more olde-worlde paraphernalia. Those by Molenaar & Van Winden on the plaza bordering on the harbour are inspired by old warehouses and the town squares of Belgium and Northern France.
