The Atlas Building by the Uruguayan-born American architect Rafael Viñoly houses offices and laboratories for the soil, water and climate research centres and the Nature Management Planning Office. The cube-shaped building has a full-height concrete grid in a double lozenge pattern with a glass facade behind it. Entered through a hexagonal opening on the first floor, the interior assembles round a building-height atrium. Four ramps in criss-cross formation represent the interaction between the different sciences. The areas of floor round the atrium are freely subdivisible; there is an additional storey in the pipeline.
