Masterplan Almere-Centrum
Crowning feature of the new centre of Almere is the Citadel shopping complex by the French architect Christian de Portzamparc. The principal square block of 130 by 130 metres is crossed by a pedestrian route and culminates in an artificial rolling landscape of grass-roofed shops dotted with family houses and an apartment complex. The shops sport virtually all-glass fronts below a broad band of red polymer concrete with deep joints. Even the five-storey Vroom & Dreesmann department store is tucked inside the ’hill’.
