Witbrant Oost is a residential estate in wooded surroundings just outside Tilburg. It has a taut rectangular pattern of narrow residential streets, yards and patios. Compared with the average Vinex district it combines a remarkable visual tranquillity with a coherent architectural image. Its 400 or so housing units are largely the work of Bedaux De Brouwer, who also drew up the masterplan. Most units have just one storey and a subdued modernist architecture. Grey and white tints predominate, occasionally alternating with cut stone. Despite the wide variety in plan types, the whole has a great sense of unity in its consistent application of patios, carports and walled back gardens.
