The tightest of budgets and an awkward site were the limiting conditions for this building which replaced the post-war temporary theatre. The 34 metre tall fly tower had to be placed at the front to allow light into the housing beyond. The plan has a symmetrical layout: from the entrance below the fly tower, long stately stairs lead past the auditorium to the foyer at the rear, an interesting spatial configuration of landings, galleries and voids. Quist's level-headedness and restraint dominate both inside and out, even in the grey and red main auditorium.
