BALJURK
ARCHIPEL ONTWERPERS, 2001-2005, Kettingstraat/Achterom, Den Haag
A number of old retail premises in the old centre near the Parliament buildings where a 19th-century through road meets the medieval street pattern, were in a state of decline. The renewal project consisted of restoring seven of the eight old facades including one by Berlage and a typical Jugendstil example. The corner premises however are entirely new and deviate in terms of design. Here a veil of bronze gauze softens the original right angle. This soft intervention proved controversial to begin with but now the 'ballroom gown' is an accepted feature of this part of town. The restored facades now front new retail spaces at street level with new housing above.
