Fiets & Stal (bike and shed) is a project launched by the City of The Hague to stimulate cycling and make it safer. From 1999 on, artists, designers and architects turned out a dozen of these 'guard houses' all with a footprint of nine square metres. The first to arrive was Atelier van Lieshout's mobile guard unit in 2001. Artist Jan Snoeck made several gaily coloured mobile sheds for use at public events. Two such structures are on permanent display along the Boulevard in Scheveningen: John Körmeling's glass pavilion and FAT's bicycle surveillance hut atop a concrete mound.
