Since the 1960s the south side of Oosterdokseiland next to Central Station had been taken up entirely by a large post office dispatch centre. This building was demolished in two phases. The freed space has been filled with buildings for culture and leisure to an urban plan by Erick van Egeraat; these include Jo Coenen's https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/2089" class="inline_link">public library, Frits van Dongen's conservatorium, a hotel, shops, cafés and restaurants, offices and housing. A loading bay and parking facility constitute an underground layer taking up the entire island. Van Egeraat's own built contribution is the conversion of a former office of the Dutch postal service.
