This monastery cum meditation centre is the result of renovating and extending a former villa and chapel on the old Steenwijk estate. The ensemble slips sensitively into the landscape, reaching out to the surrounding nature in terms of materials such as cane and timber cladding. An aerial walkway joins the cane-clad auditorium to the original building. The new timber community building hovers up against an existing wing, its supporting structure retaining the visual lines in the garden. A former gardener’s residence has been converted into an artists’ studio.
