The headquarters of the Holland-America Line transatlantic shipping company stand at the head of the pier which was once almost exclusively used by the company. The building was erected in phases, the last of which, with its distinctive towers and south elevation decorated with Art Nouveau motifs, was designed by Muller & Zonen and Van der Tak and completed in 1919. On 8 November 1971 the 'Nieuw Amsterdam', the flagship of the HAL, left the quayside for the last time. In 1992, having been empty for years, the office building was restored to its former glory and converted into a hotel cum restaurant (Hotel New York).
