Weeber's flirtation with Classicism and the Rationalist Durand has resulted here in a fully blank-walled block with facades in vivid hues, surrounded by a rusticated prison wall five metres high. The rectangular building of 80 x 200 metres enfolds two courtyards. Two hundred and fifty-two cells flank the long sides of the courtyards and the recreation rooms the short sides; all spaces look onto the yards. In the interior too, the bright colours and artworks poke fun at the grim nature of the brief.
