RESTORATION AMSTERDAMS HISTORISCH MUSEUM
B. VAN KASTEEL, J. SCHIPPER, 1969-1975, Kalverstraat 92, Amsterdam
ARCHITECT(URAL OFFICE):
Bart van Kasteel
Jaap Schipper
BUILDING TYPE:
Museums and exhibition buildings
Occupying a former orphanage, a complex cluster of buildings (1414-1579), the Historical Museum underwent an exemplary restoration which included two heterogeneous additions: an armoury and a sheltered, freely accessible museum street, the Shooting Gallery, which doubles as a public pedestrian passage. These modern elements in glass and steel contribute a lively shop-window effect to what is otherwise a largely introverted building.
