With a population of 9000, 850 beds, a total capacity of 1,300,000 m3 and a brief filling 80 books, this medical centre must be one of the largest buildings in Europe. Its gigantic components, simply arranged into the three categories of education, research and treatment, are linked by passages the width of one bay (7.8 m.). Six tall towers containing the wards are staggered, leaving lofty inner courts of 30 x 30 m. The building's architecture plays a secondary role to the iron logic of its organizational structure.
