Three boiler houses serving the district heating system in the Selwerd area were embellished with abstract decorations in glazed brick by the Groningen-based artist Siep van den Berg (1913-1998). In the 1950s, Van den Berg had worked in a Constructivist style with rectangular forms and primary colours. As the district system was losing too much heat, the boiler houses were given
another duty to perform. The housing itself was designed by the flamboyant
Groningen-based architect Jan Martini (1923-1996).
