Arthur Staal, son of J.F. Staal, was a founder member of Groep 32, the group of Amsterdam architects strongly influenced by Le Corbusier who in 1932 broke away from the orthodox functionalists centred around the magazine De 8 en Opbouw. Staal's work continued to exhibit heavily decorative tendencies. With its oblique alignment, sculptural pilotis and cornice, this Shell office building is a prominent feature of the city around the banks of the IJ.
