SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CENTRE DE OMVAL
SJ. SOETERS, 1989-1991, Ouddiemerlaan 104, Diemen
Once described by the critic Ruud Brouwers as 'the naughtiest boy in Dutch architecture', Soeters it seems can never refrain from tilting a plane or two in his designs. This seemingly haphazard building is founded on a thorough analysis of the site. Its two principal volumes assimilate the various directional lines in the surroundings and provide a springboard towards properly defining these surroundings. The brief called specifically for two volumes, a lozenge placing a hall atop a floor of offices and at the front a tilted, raised block of rooms for societies and evening classes.
