CHAUFFEUR'S HOUSE
G.TH. RIETVELD, 1927-1928, Waldeck Pyrmontkade 20, Utrecht
Described by Rietveld as 'an experiment in industrialized building', this house was built entirely of off-the-peg components, with concrete panels speckled with white enamel mounted on a steel frame. The facades and plans are based on a module of 1 x 1 m. Soon nicknamed 'the basket' or 'the sieve' because of the many leaks, the chauffeur's house was renovated by its present owner, showing respect for its original appearance.
