Hartel Flood Barrier

Built instead of an expensive dyke reinforcement programme, this storm surge barrier is the final stage in the Delta Works. Two arcuated gates of 210 by 22 metres guarantee a navigable width of 360 metres and depth of 17 metres. L-shaped in section and assembled from steel panels, these gates are attached to a pair of milk white ‘Eiffel Towers’ which pivot in a bearing ten metres in diameter. The service building was designed by Wim Quist, who was also aesthetic adviser to the engineering part of the project.
