Originally part of an ensemble comprising a harbour office, a refuge and life-buoy store, a reinforced concrete flagstaff and two lockhouses, only the lockhouses survive today. According to J.B. van Loghem, 'the best work of this nature is no longer carried out by architects, but by engineers'. This particular feat of engineering occupies an important place in Van Loghem's book Bouwen/Bauen/Bâtir/Building.
