The 1970s saw the commencement of reconstruction and rehabilitation of the renowned seaside resort Scheveningen with as main issue the monumental Kurhaus. This, a vast structure of exalted kitsch now combining hotel and casino, was honourably restored by Van Kasteel (a 'mock building', he called it). Not so successful are the less than flattering awnings and conservatory-like extensions. On the landward side the Kurhaus is almost entirely obscured from view by the stepped development (120 luxury apartments) of Spruit, De Jong, Heringa.
