With its abstract shapes and white colour this compact holiday house contrasts with the typically Dutch landscape, though its lightly curved roof is a concession. Its bedrooms occupy the ground floor; for the sake of the view the living room and kitchen are up-stairs. Linking a terrace to the garden is a handsome outdoor stair with cantilevered concrete treads, an element often come across in Rietveld's designs. The present occupant, the architect Mels Crouwel, has extended the house with a subdued steel-and-glass volume housing a new kitchen-diner and the master bedroom.
