WATER TOWER AALSMEER
H. SANGSTER, 1926-1928, Kudelstaartseweg 14, Aalsmeer
This 50 metre high water tower standing on the waters of Westeinder Plassen near Aalsmeer is remarkable in being one of the very few examples of Art Deco architecture in the Netherlands. Virtually square, it is constructed from four massive concrete columns at the corners and four lesser ones halfway across the red brick facades, bridged by horizontal concrete beams. A stand-out feature is the superimposition of layers of concrete in abstract geometric decorations, also evident at the door and windows on the ground floor.
