Randstadrail is a light-rail link between The Hague, Zoetermeer and Rotterdam. The light-rail system combines the advantages of train, tram and metro: its vehicles can travel on all rails and are lighter, which means they can accelerate faster. The viaduct in the Beatrixkwartier office district in The Hague has been constructed to act as little as possible as a barrier. Set asymmetrically in the street channel, it has an elegant tube structure and a minimum of columns at ground level. Overhead cables, lighting, rainwater discharge and escape paths are carefully tucked away or built into the design. The tilted concrete columns are set at 50-metre intervals. At the station the tracks separate, the tube widens and glass windbreaks make an appearance.
