HOUSING CENTRAAL PLAN
W.TH.H. TEN BOSCH, A.B.P. OTTEN, J.H. VAN DEN BROEK, 1936-1938, Statensingel/Stadhoudersweg, Rotterdam
The four blocks marking the intersection of Stadhoudersweg and Statensingel and bearing the name Centraal Plan, were among the many designed in the Blijdorp district by Van den Broek, Ten Bosch and Otten. Public Works director W.G. Witteveen was responsible for the district's monumental layout. The long straight, almost hermetic urban blocks accompany the broad, busy main roads. They have a functional architecture that combines brick with flat roofs and large window units whose steel frames and steel balcony railings are painted in the dark green favoured in Rotterdam. The units themselves are regular porch-access flats, flats above ground-floor shops and houses with gardens. The original quality has suffered as a result of thoughtless renovations.
