Noise barriers are a necessary evil for screening roadside residential districts from the roar of traffic. There have been various attempts across the Netherlands to exploit these screens, say by tucking houses into them. These 12 futuristic-looking homes are entirely blankwalled towards the motorway. At the front the living room, cantilevering a full seven metres, make space below for a carport. The upper portion is clad in composite cladding boards sprayed the colour of aluminium. Between the units is a roof terrace with a frosted glass shield for the sake of privacy.
