Het Funen is an old industrial zone on the island of Oostenburg, south-east of Central Station, in the bend of the Amsterdam-Utrecht railway line. A large L-shaped apartment building of 305 units by urban designer Frits van Dongen terminates the area both visually and acoustically. An electrical substation belonging to Dutch Rail (NS) has been incorporated in the perimeter development. The student flats above it are borne aloft by a gigantic framework of vierendeel girders tucked out of sight behind the brick facade. The facade along the railway line has a patterned glass noise baffle and a wide cavity. The Hidden Delights, 16 free-standing apartment blocks of 12 units or less designed by NL Architects, DKV Architecten, Erna van Sambeek, Geurst & Schulze, Kuiper Compagnons and Dick van Gameren, occupy the car-free park-like inner area.
