Mediating between the widely different scales of the old village centre of Nootdorp and the new https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/1702" class="inline_link">Ypenburg development, this shopping centre is conceived as a fortress surrounded by housing. The main building, the Basilica, has a double-height shopping arcade, a copper roof and a quasi-Mediterranean air. The shops facing it by contrast are unashamedly Old Dutch style, gables and all. Houses above the shops are reached off a raised street at the rear. The new complex accommodates itself in both scale and type to the freestanding housing above shops and semis of the neighbouring old village streets.
