A tiny plot of 3 x 5.25 metres in the centre of Utrecht lay vacant for 60 years. The original premises had been pulled down in 1940 in an abortive move to widen the road; in 1992 plans for the present house became the subject of a long legal battle. It has seven storeys all told including two basement levels. Its two kitchens, two bathrooms and three toilets are there to keep stair climbing to a minimum. The house conforms to its surroundings in size and scale but not in material, a cladding of stainless steel sandwich panels.
