Designed by the Government Architect G.C. Bremer, the post office is set back ten metres from the building line of the https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/222" class="inline_link">City Hall as a sign of deference. This did gain it a forecourt, which in fact produced quite the opposite effect. Its subdued neoclassical appearance conceals a surprisingly airy interior, a large 22.5 metre high hall set widthways in the building below a concrete parabolic barrel vault with skylights and coffering. Outside, the four shell-limestone elevations reach up four storeys to terminate in a mansard roof. The building will be converted in a shopping centre and hotel.
