Station Rotterdam CS (1957)
With the High Speed Rail System (HSL) and the light-rail link between Rotterdam, The Hague and Zoetermeer (Randstadrail) in the pipeline, it was decided to demolish Sybold van Ravesteyn's original https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/162" class="inline_link">Central Station building dating from 1957 and erect a new one. This led logically to plans to reconstruct the entire station zone, culminating in a masterplan drawn up by a coalition of architects and urban designers. In it, a large transparent roof oversails the tracks and the concourse of the new station. Daylight floods the broad passengers' tunnel below the tracks along voids and through transparent floors between the platforms. The underground Randstadrail station by Maarten Struijs feeds into the existing metro line. An esplanade with six rows of trees connects the station complex to nearby Kruisplein and the green-cultural axis of Westersingel.
