With the gradual disappearance of the fishing industry in and around Scheveningen harbour more and more industrial buildings have been falling vacant. A number of premises typical of the harbour ambience, such as the Nautilus and IJsvis warehouses, have been refurbished and primed for housing and offices. These two exemplify the 'skyborn building' advocated by Archipel Ontwerpers in particular. This is a strategy to develop empty places in the urban roofscape, in this case as up-market apartments with the cachet of a country house but in an urban context. The roof dwellings are necessarily of a lightweight construction in steel and aluminium. In 1996 Archipel had designed a penthouse nearby at Vissershavenweg 53-55.
