MUSEUM BEELDEN AAN ZEE
W.G. QUIST, 1990-1994, Harteveltstraat 1, Scheveningen
Nestling in the dunes around the early 19th-century Von Wied pavilion, this museum was designed by Wim Quist to house a private art collection. The pavilion has retained its function of clubhouse for a literary society. Exhibition spaces are accommodated in two segments of a circle partly dug into the dunes on either side of the pavilion. One segment is roofed, the other consists of three ascending terraces for outdoor showings. Daylight figures prominently in the museum, washing in through a glass strip in the roof along the curved concrete wall of the main exhibition room. Walls inside and out are of sand-coloured concrete.
