The silo building designed in 1910 by J.P. Stok at the head of Brielselaan was extended in 1931 by Brinkman & Van der Vlugt with an audacious concrete structure. The brief called for an extension 'so big as to be carried only by the most sturdy foundations imaginable'. These foundations accordingly make use of 'Sprenger' piles with a reinforced point. The steel structure stipulated in the design was replaced by concrete at a late stage, with slip formwork being used for the first time in the Netherlands for the silos and elevator towers. The two silos cantilevering over Brielselaan were added in the early 1950s. A canting office block with two live-in units designed by Herman Haan was built on the quayside in 1963.
