HOUSING AND OFFICES DE ADMIRAAL
F.J. VAN DONGEN (DE ARCHITEKTEN CIE), 2000-2003, Admiraliteitskade, Rotterdam
Taking up almost an entire block, De Admiraal makes the transition between the old fabric and the large-scale commercial buildings from the reconstruction era and the 1990s. It is partly taken up by office space, partly by housing. The office of Kralingen local council, being a public amenity, is sited near the shops and cafés and restaurants on Oostzeedijk. There are maisonettes on the levels above it. Most of the housing occupies the 78 metre tall tower. The building as a whole exudes an air of uniformity in its use of a thickset dark brick. But there is plenty of variation too in the differing window shapes, conservatory windows, recesses in the head elevations, brickwork bonds and in the position of the windows in the facade plane.
