Bedaux's existing psychiatric hospital has been extended by the Van Eycks with free-standing residential pavilions. All architectural means have been deployed to make this isolated institution for chronic psychiatric patients seem as open and accessible as possible. Thus by ranging the rooms round partially roofed atria, delivering sunlight deep into the building through roof lights and scooping deep curved recesses from one outer corner of each room, the outdoor world denied the patients has been brought in to them.
