The problems caused by wind around the Caland Bridge needed solving with a wind shield 1750 metres long, 25 metres high and 25 per cent permeable. Of the four possible models, the most efficient and certainly the most aesthetic was chosen. It applied free-standing concrete slabs rather than a perforated wall. The southern part consists of semicircular segments 18 metres in diameter; this is reduced to 4 metres for the central part. Both are 25 metres high. The northern portion uses straight concrete slabs of 10 x 10 metres.
