HOUSING DE LANDJES
F.M.J. HOUBEN (MECANOO), 1998-2001, Dirk van Prooijesingel, Rotterdam
This triangular residential development consists of four housing blocks of varying lengths. Three timber decks inserted between the blocks at first-floor level generate a second ground plane. The ground floor is given over to parking and the deck serves as a playground and car-free communal space. Voids and slits between the portions of deck let daylight into the parking level. Units are reached from both the ground floor and the deck. So-called jungle bridges stitch the three decks together. De Landjes also includes four 'waterfront houses' containing eight units apiece.
