Staal received this commission by winning a competition in 1928 also entered by J.J.P. Oud. The ultimate design, however, deviates radically from the competition scheme. A slender bell-tower and a meeting hall on stilts mark the entrance. The exchange hall of 90 x 60 metres is spanned by arched steel girders clad in concrete panels embedded with round glazed tiles. A gently curving glass bay window gives a wide view of the Coolsingel boulevard. During renovations the café on the plaza (Beursplein) and the meeting room of the Chamber of Commerce were restored to their original state.
