Industrial and public-utility buildings
This restored gateway building originally contained office space, a canteen and changing rooms with washing facilities for the 500 dockers who worked in the adjoining sheds, since demolished. The contours of these sheds can still be seen in the side walls. There were also rooms for customs and passengers. A railway track used to run at an angle across the ground floor. During restoration, the original steel sections were once again fitted with single glazing, the sawtooth skylights on the roof regained their infill of wire mesh reinforced glass and the radiators lining the walls were honourably reinstated. The revolving windows were refitted with the brass hardware they used to have, carefully reconstructed from the sole original handle discovered during restoration work.
