TWO PRIVATE HOUSES SCHIEKADE
P.G. BUSKENS; J. VERHEUL DZN., 1896;-1906, Schiekade 77; 73, Rotterdam
In the house at number 77, built for the building contractor C. Kurpershoek, Buskens whipped up a mix of then current building styles into a delightfully eclectic facade. The off-centre entrance, the tile pictures and the application of machine-made brick are typical Art Nouveau traits. The house at number 73 was built for Abraham van Stolk, owner of the timber company domiciled in the same street (see also https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/261" class="inline_link">Ungerplein). Verheul designed this house in the so-called 'Um 1800' style to accommodate it to the surrounding buildings.
