HOUSING
H.F. KOLLHOFF, 2000-2005, Laan op Zuid / Willem Dudokplein, Rotterdam
De Compagnie housing complex deviates radically from the surrounding buildings. Hans Kollhoff, who supervised the area's construction, saws to it that the architects kept to the urban guidelines while seriously overstepping them himself. His green oxidized copper roofs are inspired by 19th-century jerry-building in Rotterdam. The 196 housing units are divided among several dwelling types. Three- to five-storey units stand along the quay on Spoorweghaven, yet most of the units are apartments in the two towers and in the less-tall block with the name Passage (arcade). A private garden courtyard serves the complex as a whole.
