BUILDING TYPE:
Special accommodation
Built out of the need for an interdenominational hospital, Ikazia itself is a fairly nondescript design by Cramer and Kruisheer, two Rotterdam architects specializing in hospitals. The cylindrical nurses' residence by contrast is a remarkable building and a salient feature of Zuidplein despite its negligible dimensions. Eighteen nurses' rooms line the outer wall of each storey. The core is taken up with vertical circulation, toilets and showers, a wash-house and a small kitchen. Entrance, television room and recreation room with terrace are on the first floor. The concrete structure and internal layout were designed as a joint operation.
