BUILDING TYPE:
Buildings for education
Three building parts - a utilitarian high-rise slab of faculties and institutes, a sculptural wing of lecture halls and a general assembly hall cum senate wing - assemble round a square terminated by an aerial walkway. A library building standing in the water extends the line of the lecture hall wing. The expressive concrete architecture and 'bourgeois' cladding were fairly unenthusiastically received on delivery, at a time when the wave of democratization was at its peak. The complex was extended in two phases from the late 1980s to the mid '90s with new buildings for offices and lecture halls.
