SILO BUILDING NCHM
A. BODON (DSBV), -1964, Bunschotenweg 125, Rotterdam
This cement silo is one of the most expressive silo buildings in the Rotterdam docks. Entirely of concrete, the building's main function is to distribute the cement and is designed wholly in accordance with the precept of 'form follows function'. The cement conveyed there by boat is lifted out by mechanical grab and poured into a funnel. From there it travels up an elevator tower topped with a machine-room to a sorting bridge where it is divided among eight cylindrical silos of descending height. More funnels on the underside of the silos channel the cement into lorries or railway wagons. A dust removal unit hangs between the silos and the elevator tower.
