This sunken pedestrian mall, almost immediately dubbed the 'Koopgoot' ('Spendthrift Gully' comes close), links two major shopping streets, Hoogstraat and https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/170" class="inline_link">Lijnbaan, via Beursplein metro station. One effect is to reduce the increased number of pedestrians crossing Coolsingel. The walls of this 'tunnel' resemble Italian arcades and consist entirely of small shops. Two winding canopies are meant to stress the unity of the shopping centre. The original post-war reconstruction architecture on site has been replaced by a metropolitan centre of 'contemporary' design topped off by the inevitable high rise, a residential tower block.
